If you’ve been tracking accommodation prices in host cities, you already know: it’s not pretty. Hotels are pushing past $500/night in many markets, and affordable inventory is thinning out fast. For fans trying to attend multiple matches or follow their team through the group stage, the math gets brutal quickly.
That’s why this initiative from CSM Travel caught my attention.
The Concept
CSM Travel, a Canadian-based tour operator, is working directly with universities across World Cup host cities to secure dorms and apartments as an alternative to traditional hotels. The idea is simple: offer fan groups clean, affordable lodging near stadiums and Fan Zones at a fraction of hotel prices. It’s a win-win-win situation as fans get a budget option, CSM Travel expands their offerings and universities make money from otherwise empty and unused buildings.
They’re actively finalizing deals, but here’s the thing: they need a clearer picture of demand before they can commit to room blocks.
Which cities have the most interest? Which supporter groups are looking for this kind of option? How many rooms should they hold?
That’s where the survey comes in. Fans can fill it out to express interest so these details can be communicated with universities as planning finalizes.
Details of Package
What you get:
- Clean rooms on university campuses
- Proximity to stadiums and Fan Zones
- Accommodations grouped by country when possible (stay with fellow supporters)
- Significantly lower costs than hotels
What you don’t get:
- Luxury
- Hotel amenities
- Private bathrooms (in most cases)
This isn’t for everyone. If you need a king bed, room service, and a spa, this isn’t your move. But if your priority is being at the World Cup without obliterating your budget on lodging, it’s worth a look.
What the Accommodations Look Like
CSM shares an example in the survey from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Some university dorms offer double room options and private bathrooms. Others, like SFU, have single beds and shared bathrooms. It varies by campus and city.
You can view SFU’s booking options through CSM’s partner Discover Canada Tours here: https://discovercanadatours.ventrata.site/en
The Survey – Fill Out if Interested
The survey is quick and helps CSM understand:
- Which teams/supporter groups have interest
- Which host cities have the most demand
- Whether fans are staying for one match, the group stage, or the entire tournament
- If you’ve already booked other accommodations
You can optionally leave contact info if you want follow-up details.
If you’d rather just register your interest anonymously, skip that section.
Why Share This
If you’re part of a supporter group or know fans who are budget-conscious, pass this along. The more responses CSM gets, the better they can allocate rooms across cities and fan groups. It’s a chance for the community to potentially create a more affordable path to the tournament while staying alongside fellow supporters.
This is a paid partnership, and I wanted to be upfront about that. But I also wouldn’t share it if I didn’t think it was genuinely useful for fans navigating the accommodation crunch.
