Buying 2026 World Cup tickets is difficult. Every World Cup is difficult and comes with its own nuances. Regarding the Visa Presale Phase, FIFA’s official rules run 7 pages, but we’ve consumed this info to create five simple insights every fan should know before notifications begin on September 29.
Preparation before getting into the ticketing portal to make your purchase is vital for your success.
1. Household Reversal
- Section 4a limits entries to one per household, regardless of entry method.
- FIFA told The Athletic it will “scrub” duplicate entries rather than disqualify people outright.
- Still unclear: whether FIFA has updated its “household” definition for purchase limits.
The Athletic’s article discussing nuances of “household” definition and how it played into the applications for the Lottery. Given the murkiness of the conversation, not sure how this will play a role in purchasing limitations.
2. Winning ≠ Tickets
- “Winning” in this phase doesn’t guarantee tickets.
- It means you get a time slot to shop, but only if inventory is left.
- Section 8d warns later slots may have “limited or no available tickets.”
- All purchases are first-come, first-served during your slot.
Can you imagine the roller-coaster ride of emotions to be granted entry into the FIFA Ticketing Portal in the lottery, only to discover your desired matches are sold out? It will happen; hopefully not to any of us reading this.
3. Batch Notifications
- Notifications will begin no earlier than September 29.
- FIFA will send them out in batches, so don’t panic if you don’t hear right away.
- Some fans may not learn their time slot until just 48 hours before it begins.
This is a lesson you must apply throughout the World Cup. Tickets come and go in phases and you should never give up based on one check into the Ticketing Portal.
4. Check Your FIFA Account
- Don’t rely on email alone. Check both your email and your FIFA ticketing account for updates (Section 7).
- A Visa card is required for purchase, but it doesn’t have to be the same card used in your application.
- An Unknown: how this requirement of a Visa card for purchase impacts mail-in ballot entries for non-Visa holders?
The assumption is this is to cover themselves if an email bounces but it is a good reminder to always be checking into the FIFA portal for updates. Seats don’t get assigned until much closer to the tournament but it is always fun when the word gets out seats are assigned before FIFA officially announces it.
5. One Slot Only
- Each selected household gets one time slot.
- You can log in multiple times during that window to make purchases.
- Study the schedule ahead of time and know your budget, because once your slot opens, you’ll need to act fast.
